A few weeks ago, I received an email from Rafael, who expressed interest in a TfP shoot (Time-for-Prints). Such shoots often arise through platforms where photographers and models showcase their portfolios and apply for casting calls. After discussing some details via email, we agreed to meet at my studio to get to know each other in person.
Taking the First Steps as a Model
During our conversation, it became clear that Rafael had no prior experience as a model but was eager to dive into the world of photography. Since he didn’t yet have a portfolio or professional photos, we decided to start right there. Our goal was to give Rafael his first experience in front of the camera and create a foundation for his portfolio.
The meeting was very positive, and we planned an initial shoot focusing on portrait and fashion photography. Rafael brought well-selected outfits that matched his style and suited the planned sets perfectly. It was exciting to introduce him to the process of a photoshoot and work together to create great images.
The Shoot – Efficient and Professional
During the shoot, we regularly reviewed the images on a large monitor. This method allows for immediate feedback, pose adjustments, and achieving optimal results on the spot. This reduces post-production to a minimum, as we strive to capture the best shots directly in the camera.
Rafael proved to be a reliable and punctual partner, which made working with him a pleasure. His natural and charming demeanor in front of the camera made the shoot not only professional but also enjoyable. I was particularly impressed by his quick learning and willingness to try new things.
After the Shoot – Images and Next Steps
After each shoot, I provide all the raw images to the models in lower resolution. This approach helps them reflect on the results and select their favorite shots. For Rafael, the images were organized into three folders: „Out of Cam,“ „Finished Images,“ and „Organizational Files,“ such as the model release.
Rafael’s task now is to select his favorite photos for me to edit. My focus during editing is on cropping, exposure, and tonal correction. My goal is always to keep edits minimal to maintain the natural feel of the images.
With these photos, Rafael can now create his portfolio or use them on social media to promote himself as a model. After gaining experience with other photographers, it might be exciting to plan a follow-up shoot to document his progress.
Conclusion – Working with New Models
Working with newcomers to the modeling industry is always a rewarding experience. Rafael demonstrated that starting out without prior experience can be successful with the right attitude and motivation. The collaboration was inspiring, and I look forward to seeing how his modeling journey unfolds.
